Pravana Vivids Dye Update and Quick FOTD

pravana vivds red

SO! I wanted to spend a while to really get to see how I liked this dye and what I thought of it. So to start off, I’ll say this. My hair is actually pretty awkwardly dyed and isn’t bleached evenly I would say. This is a result from doing the ombre inspired hair technique, so my ends of my hair are actually bleached.

That being said, when I put the Pravana Vivids, it was more of a purple toned (because Wild Orchid is apparently super dark purple but the swatch on the box didn’t look like that!). The purple only really showed on the ends of my hair and that is where the dye caught on most. I really didn’t feel this dye got my hair as vibrant as I like it to be and I believe it has to do with the fact that this dye will work best on pre-lightened or bleached hair, which no way in hell was I doing because my hair has gone through enough. What I usually use to lighten my roots is the Loreal Hi-Color Intense in magenta, but I tried a different product this time and actually ended up hating it. I forgot the brand, it’s a salon brand, but it didn’t lift my roots as light and intense as I usually like them, so I don’t know if that had anything to do with it also.

I feel like it’s because the Wild Orchid was so, so dark and I didn’t get to use a brighter, more vibrant mixture of dye. I’m still unsure what I think and I know there is different Pravana dye products to use. I’ve heard people swear by this stuff, I’m just really going to force myself into trying it again, this time with the Loreal to pre-lighten and I am only going to use the Magenta by Pravana Vivids since I’m leaning more towards a violet red rather than a true red. I still don’t know why I feel like it didn’t grab onto all my hair but it’s something I am going to be sure to ask a cosmetologist.

Overall, my opinion is still unsure. I’m still open to trying this product and the colors are actually SUPER nice, so soon enough when I need another dye job I’ll be trying it again.

Another photo of my color you can see through my bangs. It’s just too dark for my liking, I want to go brighter

Anyway, as for a super quick FOTD, I have my usual face routine as mentioned in my other FOTD’s.
I’m wearing on my eyes: MAC’s Vanilla, MAC’s blush in Harmony in my crease, NYX Skinny Felt tip liner, Diorshow mascara
Eyebrows filled in with: Maybeline Define a Brow in Dark Brown
Lips: it’s actually only lipliner… NYX in a red. I couldn’t find my Ruby woo! :(
Cheeks: Harmony by MAC

The Pravana vivids isn’t a color dye in the sense that you use developer. This product is meant to be used on pre-lightened hair and should not be mixed with developer. It’s the same concept of the Manic Panic products. I use ONLY Pravana because it is the best of the “staining” type product. I used to use the Hi Color from Loreal for dark hair and that does lighten pretty well while depositing the color.

Yes, I know there is no developer! I just figured that since I had mixed such a darker color (that being the Wild Orchid) it totally disrupted what color I was intentionally going for. I heard it was a great stainer, that is definitely why I was so psyched about trying it. Can’t wait to try a brighter mix this time! Thanks!

My natural color is a medium ash brown. My stylist lightened parts of my hair for highlights and dyed the rest of it a dark brown. Then she dryed my hair and put the Wild Orchid all over. The result was a dark almost black purple with lighter purple highlights and it has really lasted a long time. It has been 10 weeks with zero fading.
However when I went back to have my roots touched up she didn’t do any processing of my roots at all. They were pruple for a couple of weeks and then they started to fade.
So it seems you have to use some kind of color with a developer before you apply only the pravana in order for it to take vividly and last.

Yup, of course. These dyes even state on the box that it will hold on stronger and much more vibrant on pre-lightened hair!

Does this color “bleed” less compared to Manic Panic when you wash your hair ?

I may have to give this one a try !

    • avatar Heather says:

      NO! It gets everywhere!!
I have to wear gloves to wash my hair, dry my hair and style my hair.
Even after my hair is dry and styled when I run my fingers through my hair it stains my nails purple.

Haha, of course this is normal with these types of dyes, everyone experiences this. Mine is more tolerable and not as much as when I first started using these types of dyes!

I love the color of your bangs, It’s like a vibrant deep red I effing love it! Was this the color you achieved when lightening your hair with Loreal Hicolor Magenta and then Using wild orchid pravana and Magenta pravana? I have never used pravana but If I can achieve this color I’m willing to do it. Please describe to me everything you did to achieve this color, I’m in love with it! <3

  12. avatar Xtina says:

The colors you used to achieve that color of your bangs in the pic above was pravana red and magenta? Cause I have a few tubes of each of those at home and that is exactly the color I’m looking to achieve.
