Links to FAQ About Red Hair

My most commonly asked question is what hair dye I use and how I maintain my color. To make replying to everyone’s questions a lot more easier, here are a list of links I have provided on articles I have written on my hair. From tutorials to tips and tricks, I have discussed mostly everything I have ever been asked.

PLEASE know that I am NOT a Cosmetologist!!! Although I have learned so much from my personal stylist, Danielle Ullman, I still do not feel comfortable answering questions about getting you to this color from other shades such as blonde or black. Please consult a professional hair stylist for those types of questions.

i dyed my hair with hicolor red hot for a while. it was too dark so i switched to hicolor magenta with a 40 developer. it lightened but not enough. what should i do? should i keep doing it until it lightens?
i really want it as red as yours! but i dont think semi permanent dyes would work on me since i used a permanent color. i also cant bleach because ive done that and it ruined my hair. thanks :)

Keep in mind L’oreal Hilift is very similar to bleach, it is just that it lightens to an actual color. My point being, you can easily damage your hair by using this product just as bad, especially with a 40 volume developer which isn’t recommended unless you’re bleaching your hair to platinum. I suggest giving your hair a break or else you might break it off and really damage it. Definitely do not dye it again, give your hair a break! And if you decide to, use a lower developer. I recommend seeking professional advice and help as well to make sure you don’t do anything that will damage your hair beyond repair.

Hey…. I have the Privana Vivid purple in my hair now, wanting to go Vivid Red with a little orange or blonde (if the color will take correctly). From my readings i see that privana does not bleach out, any advice on how to achieve my hair color goal.

    • avatar Sara says:

Since I am not a cosmetologist, I would suggest visiting Pravana’s facebook page and asking them. Educators will normally respond to your question and give you the best advice

hey your hair is sooo pretty , i want to go that colour but i think because my hair is black and id have to lighten it i might just start with foils and do it gradually also i live in Australia do you know of any hair product colour that we sell over here that’s equal to the colour in your hair as i am not sure that they sell the same product as you use in the town i live in… you look amazing :) also seeing your a make up artist do you know of any foundation that gives you a flawless look with out looking like its caked on…

    • avatar Sara says:

Considering I dont even personally dye my hair, I do not know of any Australian products. As far as foundation and being cakey, a lot has to do with the technique and how it is applied/set. I love Makeup Forever HD!

Please from your personal opinion. I have used L’Oreal HighLights Hicolor in Magenta & Red together to lift my dark brown/black hair about 3 levels. I’ve added MP vampire red, and its made a great difference. My concern is its been over 2months since ive colored my red hair(besides manic panic in my conditoner). If I re-apply L’oreal just RED will it lift my hair more? Or am I at its max. lift? I dont want to waste a good coloring. Thanks for ur time. :)

    • avatar Sara says:

Hmm, I cant really say. I would say to get a professionals opinion who can take a look at your hair and its color now to judge just to be safe

  7. avatar Fatima says:

Hi, I recently colored my hair red (this past Monday to be exact), I had to bleach it so the color could stay because a few months ago i colored it black and it did stay but the color is not even in my hair, some parts are darker than others, the bottom of it is the same tone as the top part and the middle part is darker. I used L’oreal HiColor the Red and the Magenta mixed together. what do you think i should do to even it out? thank you (: oh and I love your hair by the way <3

    • avatar Sara says:

Hmm okay I think you should visit a professional to help you with this! They should be able to even it out for you, since I am not a cosmetologist I don’t want to give you any incorrect advice

hey well I currently have dark brown hair and I wanted to get my hair red. well not too red maybe kinda burgendyish to start off then work my way to a vibrant red. Anyways, I bought loreal hicolor in red fire and pravana vivids in red and violet. I was wondering if it was fine mixing the two pravana dyes together or would I be better off getting manic panic?

  9. avatar Norma says:

Hey, i have black hair and got red highlights but the color faded already. I was wondering if it is possible to redye my highlights with red manic panic dye or any other product without it turning the black into red?

  10. avatar tarabella says:

Hi Sara:) first of all I cant explain how phenomenal you and your tutorials are, thank you for your time! Well I was wondering how you disguise your bangs? Because I cannot seem to get them to cooperate to put in a bun or putting them on the side without one of the strands popping out, thank you.

    • avatar Sara says:

Thank you so much! I flipped hair from the back of my head over my bangs. I have a “tutorial” or more so detailed post, just do a little search under hair and itll pop up!

Hi Sara thank you for all the helpful information, I was wondering if you could tell me what shampoo and conditioner do you use ?

  12. avatar lisa says:

    Hi,
I have my mid/dark brown hair dyed at a salon but they can never get it red enough. For the past year I was using a home dye, live xxl red passion but keep wanting to go redder but the salons have not really helped. They have not bleached or colour removed my hair but the place I got it done at yesterday put a loreal dye on, I cannot remember the name for it but it’s not on the page with the normal reds, its on a page with really vivid colours on. She said it would lift my hair (think she mixed 20% with it as said it wouldn’t need 30% as it’s so bright). It is a little brighter but not much and indoors it looks dark brown even though outside in the sun it gleams. I know you don’t like to advise people what to do but can you tell me just in your opinion what would you do if you were me? I will always get it done prefessionally :)

    • avatar Sara says:

I will tell you that I never felt my hair was vibrant enough just using permanent dyes. I always top my color off with a super bright red semi permanent color, such as Pravana that I use. This helps. I would suggest letting your hair take a breather before considering to lighten again if that was something you were planning, but try using something like Pravana (since it will be at a salon) to top your color off

My hair is a Wild Cherry Rinse , but it looks like crimson , I would like it to look a lot more duller between Crimson and burgundy , do you have any advice on what I should do to tone my color a shade that is NOT so bright ?

  14. avatar Amy says:

    You are so wonderfully helpful!

I’ve had my hair bright red for about 6 months, been using Pravana Vidids and my hair stylist has had to bleach my roots each time. Its starting to look TOO bright, like almost florescent, and I’d like to have it a more toned down, but still vibrant.

does your hair dresser lighten your hair much before applying the color? Is there a pravana color I could mix it with, to maybe tone it down a tad bit?
